about

The title of this album is an attempt to honor and give credit to the Gullah people who played similar instruments in the 18th Century near Beaufort, South Carolina.

The banjo is low tuned which for me is a healing and meditative sound. Hope they bring you some of that . The tunes I’m playing and the style I play do not represent music from this community. All I can hope is that there is a spirit that we share.
I’ve had the pleasure of meeting several people from this community recently and have been blessed by their kindness and hospitality. We have been discussing working together on a gourd banjo project which I hope comes to fruition.
The banjo I’m playing on these tunes is a recreation of the banjo in the “Old Plantation” painting which depicts people from this community playing the instrument circa 1785.
This wonderful gourd banjo was made by luthier Pete Ross with extensive modifications to make its playing characteristics similar to modern instruments.
